This relatively small town has always been an important point on the Bulgarian map. The main livelihood of the local people was sheep breeding and wool production but also other crafts were well developed and exported.
The Glazne River was the reason water mills, sawmills and tabahanas for leather tanning were built. Bansko quickly became an important commercial center during the National Renaissance. Commercial connections were established with Central and Western Europe, as well as with the Aegean coast.
Local people became richer and this was obvious by visiting their houses - beautiful paintings, furniture and decoration were brought from abroad. They were getting more educated and more influenced from the modern world. This was the reason why Bansko became the birthplace of some of the most famous Bulgarian writers, teachers and national heroes of the Bulgarian Renaissance (17th to 19th centuries).
A walk around Bansko old quarter reminds us of its glorious past. The unique stone architecture of the houses goes together with beautiful mural decoration and woodcrafting. Visiting the local museums, listening the local folklore and tasting the delicious Macedonian cuisine is a must while staying here!

Bansko is located in the foothills of the impressive Pirin mountain with its highest peak Vihren (2914m). This is probably the main reason why most of the visitors come here - hiking in summer or skiing in winter. Bansko is today a well renowned ski resort, the biggest in the Balkan Peninsula.
But not only the mountain lovers find Bansko attractive! You can spend your time visiting its historical old town and the nearest villages around or practicing different activities like horse riding and treat yourself in some of the local SPA centers with mineral hot springs.
